In an innovative approach aimed at modernizing access to religious consultations, the Minister of Religious Affairs and Wakfs, Youssef Belmehdi, announced on Thursday in Algiers the imminent launch of a mobile application called “La Fatwa Houdouria”. This application will allow the faithful to benefit from fatwa consultations in real time, thanks to the virtual presence of sheikhs and muftis able to interact directly with seekers through remote communication means.
This initiative, presented in anticipation of the sacred month of Ramadan, is part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to facilitate access to religious services and meet the spiritual needs of the community. Minister Belmehdi encouraged citizens to turn to competent religious institutions to resolve their issues, relying on a moderate reference that reflects the values and principles on which they were raised.
Capacity building and preparations for Ramadan
The minister emphasized that this meeting is part of the preparations to address various jurisprudential issues that are often more frequently asked by citizens during the month of Ramadan. The activation of this fatwa mechanism aligns with the missions and competences of the ministry, in accordance with current decrees and laws.
As part of this initiative, and to meet the increasing number of fatwa requests, whether in person, by phone, or through other social communication means, the ministry has installed 38 imam muftis across the various wilayas of the country. This measure is complemented by the establishment of provincial scientific councils and fatwa offices at the level of the sector’s relevant directorates.
Furthermore, the minister also mentioned that a fatwa office is available at the ministry’s headquarters, not to mention the ministerial fatwa commission which includes members of the Higher Islamic Council, the Great Mosque of Algiers, as well as experts and specialists in the field.
This approach demonstrates the ministry’s willingness to adapt to technological developments and to effectively meet the expectations of the faithful, by offering them services adapted to the digital age. It also reflects Algeria’s commitment to preserving a moderate approach to Islam, while facilitating access to enlightened and authorized religious advice.
