The country’s dams, which had reached alarming levels, are now experiencing a spectacular resurgence after the recent rains that have fallen in several regions.
Their fill rate has risen to 40.85%, a significant improvement compared to the dangerously low levels seen recently, revealed Ali Boutata, central director of maintenance, control, and operation of dams at the National Dams Agency (ANBT).
However, the situation is more favorable in the East of the country compared to the Center and the West, confirms the director. According to the same official, the fill rate of the dams is significantly higher than the one recorded last year at the same period (which was 34.9%).
On the other hand, a significant imbalance is observed between the three regions of the country. Indeed, the East shows a particularly high dam fill rate, reaching 66.04%.
In fact, eight dams in the East, including those of Beni Haroun (Mila) and Tabellout (Jijel), are even filled to 100%. The same trend is observed for the dams of Beni-Zid, Zardezas in the wilaya of Skikda, and Mexa in the municipality of Bougous, wilaya of El Tarf.
However, the Center is at 27% and the West at an even more worrying level of 19%.
The country’s dams record unprecedented rates after years of decline
Ali Boutata also highlighted the case of the Tichy-Haf dam in Bejaia. In fact, its fill rate has exceeded 50%, while it was only 3% recently. He specified that this rate could increase further in the coming days and weeks.
“The amount of water collected in the Tichy Haf dam in Bejaia in recent days has not been recorded for years,” adds the director before continuing: “the fill rate should increase with the continuation of river flow.”
The El Hamiz dam, for its part, received such large quantities of water that the surplus, 5 million cubic meters, had to be discharged into the Kaddara dam in the commune of El Kharrouba, in the wilaya of Boumerdès.
Mr. Boutata also indicated that the level of the Koudiat Acerdoune dam, located in the commune of Maala, in the wilaya of Bouira, which was at 2% of its capacity, has risen to about 6% thanks to the water discharged from the Oued Isser at the dam intake of Beni Amrane.
Half a million cubic meters of water are pumped daily from this source, the same source adds.
