Today, Sunday, February 25, 2024, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, officially inaugurated the Grand Mosque of Algiers. Many political and religious personalities, both national and foreign, were present for this historic event.
Upon his arrival, the Head of State was welcomed by the dean of the mosque, Mohamed El Maamoun El Kacemi Hassani, as well as by the Minister of Religious Affairs and Waqfs, Youcef Belmehdi, and the Minister of Housing, Mohamed Tarek Belaribi.
The Grand Mosque of Algiers, also known as Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, is the third largest in the world, after the Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. With a prayer hall of 20,000 m2, it can accommodate up to 120,000 worshipers.
The prayer hall of the Grand Mosque of Algiers is surrounded by colonnades, with a beautiful white marble mihrab in the east. A dome with a diameter of 50 meters overlooks the hall, reaching a height of 70 meters. As for the minaret, it is the tallest in the world, soaring to 265 meters. An observation platform at the top allows visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the Bay of Algiers.
