The month of Sha’ban began on Sunday, February 11, 2024 in most Islamic countries, including Algeria. This means that the majority of countries will look to observe the crescent moon announcing the beginning of Ramadan on Sunday, March 10.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Wakfs clarified in a statement that the first day of Sha’ban 1445 corresponds to Sunday, February 11, 2024. The night of doubt to observe the crescent moon marking the beginning of the month of Ramadan this year (1445/2024) will be on Sunday, 29 Sha’ban 1445, which is March 10, 2024.

According to a statement from the International Astronomical Center published on Monday, the central conjunction will occur at nine o’clock GMT on the same day, and therefore the crescent moon will be invisible after sunset in almost all regions of the Islamic world, indicating that many countries will start Ramadan on Monday, March 11.

According to scientific criteria established for the observation of the crescent moon, it will be impossible to see it on Sunday, March 10 in the Arab and Islamic world, with the naked eye or with a telescope.

However, observation with a telescope could be possible from certain parts of the Americas, especially the western regions. Countries requiring a correct local observation could begin Ramadan on Tuesday, March 12.

On March 11, naked-eye observation will be relatively easy from all regions of the Islamic world. Observers can look west about 15 to 25 minutes after sunset, looking for the crescent near the horizon. The crescent moon will then appear thin and close to the horizon before disappearing about 60 to 80 minutes after sunset.
