On April 6, 2024, corresponding to the 27th day of Ramadan, a heinous crime shook the locality of Douar Draa Halima, in the municipality of Ouled Sabor, near the city of Setif. A man savagely murdered his wife, aged 32, before attempting to conceal his crime by incinerating her body.

According to the initial elements of the investigation, the perpetrator of the crime struck his wife multiple times before fatally stabbing her inside their home. In a panic and trying to erase the traces of his act, he then transported the victim’s body in his car to a location near the railway. There, he wrapped her in a pile of wool and set her on fire.

A horrifying scenario discovered by a farmer who, alerted by thick smoke emanating from the forest, went to the scene with his sons. It was there that they made the horrific discovery of the victim’s body, a woman lying amidst a pile of burning wool.

A crucial witness also reported seeing a man in his forties, presumed to be the deceased’s husband, fleeing hastily from the crime scene. The prompt intervention of the gendarmes led to the arrest of the suspect and his placement in custody.

The investigation opened by the gendarmerie brigade of Ouled Sabor aims to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy and the motive behind the murder. The suspect will be presented to the Public Prosecutor at the court of Setif at the conclusion of the investigation.

The news of the heinous crime in Douar Draa Halima spread like wildfire on social media, sparking a wave of indignation and anger among internet users.

Horror and dismay dominate the comments in the face of this new femicide that is mourning Algeria. The multiplication of these barbaric crimes against women arouses deep emotions and profound indignation in society.

Indeed, this tragedy is only the second in the span of a month. On March 17 (7 Ramadan), in Oum-El-Bouaghi, a man savagely stabbed his 24-year-old wife just before breaking the fast.

Since the beginning of the year 2024, there have already been 18 femicides recorded in Algeria. An alarming figure that highlights the persistent violence against women and the urgent need to take concrete measures to combat this scourge.

On social media, internet users call for mobilization and action. They demand stricter laws from the authorities against femicide perpetrators and better protection for women.

The hashtag #خسرنا_وحدة_منا (We have lost one of our own) launched by the collective Feminicides Algérie on social media resonates as a cry of pain and anger in the face of the increasing number of femicides in the country.
