The Algerian National Gendarmerie services have recently launched targeted campaigns against the authors of videos posted on social networks, promoting infringements of road safety rules. During the last month of February, 28 cases were addressed, marking a significant step in the fight against reckless behaviors on the road.
Major Samir Bouchehit, head of the communication office of the National Gendarmerie’s Road Information and Coordination Center, specified in a statement to the Algerian news agency that this operation followed surveillance of online activities violating road safety rules by the center’s road surveillance unit.
He highlighted the identification of several videos on the “TikTok” network showing individuals performing dangerous maneuvers and driving at excessive speeds, without respecting the most basic traffic laws and guidelines.
These videos reveal that young individuals, some still in high school or university, aged 16 to 29 years old, are driving motorbikes or light vehicles recklessly, performing maneuvers that could endanger themselves and others. The National Gendarmerie services emphasize that these serious maneuvers and infractions are committed on highways and fast roads, with the goal of sharing them on their personal accounts to attract a growing number of followers and participants.
Major Bouchehit emphasized that the majority of the authors of these videos seek to gain notoriety and increase their number of followers by publishing content that has a negative impact on young people, due to their lack of road awareness and compliance with safe driving rules.
In order to put an end to these infractions, coordination has been established with regional units to arrest suspects and present them to judicial authorities for appropriate legal measures. In the same context, Major Bouchehit stated that the Road Information and Coordination Center will continue to monitor and control the digital space to detect and combat any activity that could provide young people with new criminal ideas, potentially leading to serious road accidents by taking a deterrent approach and strictly enforcing the law against offenders.
This crackdown campaign has impacted several wilayas, including Algiers, Chlef, Oran, El Oued, Béjaïa, Jijel, Constantine, and Tébessa, and has resulted in the handling of 28 cases during the last month of February, which should help curb the spread of these infractions.
