A ministerial meeting was held in Algiers, focusing on the regulation and organization of the smartphone market in Algeria, with a particular emphasis on the possibility of re-launching their local production. Chaired by the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, this working session also brought together the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Karim Bibi-Triki, as well as the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni.
Indeed, during this meeting, where the president of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA), Kamel Moula, and economic operators in the mobile phone sector were also present, operators shared various experiences related to the assembly of mobile phones, highlighting the importance of past experience and investments made in this field. Production lines are ready to be restarted to revive this industry.
As part of the coordination between ministerial departments, the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production emphasized the importance of identifying all available potential and coordinating efforts to successfully implement this initiative.
Modernization of infrastructure and the imperative of self-sufficiency
Furthermore, the Minister of Post and Telecommunications highlighted the efforts of his sector to modernize infrastructure and provide access to the Internet. He emphasized the importance of ensuring self-sufficiency in the local market by providing smartphones with the latest technologies, while also ensuring effective after-sales service.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Trade stressed the need to control foreign trade and conduct a thorough evaluation to avoid past mistakes, particularly regarding integration.
Moreover, the economic operators present expressed their satisfaction with the government’s strategy to revive this activity. They affirmed their willingness to contribute to achieving the set objectives. They also agreed to continue meetings with economic operators to define the main lines of the specifications governing this activity.
In conclusion, this ministerial meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between different actors to revive the local production of smartphones in Algeria. With a strong determination and enhanced ministerial coordination, the goal of achieving self-sufficiency in this field seems within reach.
