The winter of 2024 in Algeria has been marked by a succession of variations in both temperatures and climate. After a nearly dry month of January, beneficial precipitation has brought much-needed relief to many provinces in February.

This rain was followed by an exceptionally mild period, even breaking records for the winter season. But this calm was short-lived, as intense rains made their return.

It is in this context that Mr. Malek Abdesselam, a doctor in hydrogeology and professor at the Mouloud Mammeri University in Tizi-Ouzou, shared important data regarding the precipitation recorded in Algeria in February 2024 on his Facebook page.

In addition to the recorded precipitation in several provinces of the country, the strong thunderstorms on February 17th, 2024 led to flooding in several municipalities and neighborhoods in the capital of the Jijel province.

Furthermore, the professor draws attention to the importance of taking advantage of rainy episodes to meet the needs of the coming summer. The hydrologist proposes a promising solution for effectively managing rainwater.

He suggests the construction of permeable and submersible weir-dams in the rivers to promote the retention and storage of these waters. This urgent, simple, and cost-effective approach, according to the expert, would slow down the flow of rainwater and retain it in strategic areas.
