It is already the end of February, leaving behind the memory of a week marked by the welcome return of rain and winter cold. For this Thursday, the National Meteorological Office (ONM) has issued several special weather bulletins (BMS), revealing a contrasting picture of the Algerian sky. By reading this article, discover what the weather holds for the end of this week!
In the West and Center-West of the country, a sky scattered with clouds will pass by, offering some timid clearings. On the other hand, in the regions of the Center-East and the East, Météo Algérie warns us of a sky often cloudy, with rain showers, sometimes punctuated by thunderstorms and locally accompanied by hail showers. These rainfall is expected to be particularly intense on the East coast, where sea spray will strengthen the intensity of the showers.
As for the vast Saharan expanses, the weather forecast for this February 29 indicates that the North Sahara and oases will experience a partly cloudy sky, while other regions in our deep South will enjoy a clear sky, sometimes slightly veiled.
Regarding the maximum temperatures, they will fluctuate today between 12 °C and 20 °C along the coasts. Inland, the thermometer will show values ranging from 8 °C to 20 °C, while in the Saharan regions, temperatures will vary between 12 °C and 31 °C. In addition, Météo Algérie has also announced snowfall on the reliefs of the Center-East and East, exceeding altitudes of 1000 to 1100 meters.
BMS – Météo Algérie: alert for strong winds in several provinces!
The National Meteorological Office (ONM) issued two special weather bulletins (BMS) today warning of potentially dangerous weather conditions in several regions of the country. Indeed, the first BMS “strong wind” places the provinces of Ouled Djellal, El M’ghair, Touggourt, El Oued and the south of Khenchela on orange alert. Strong winds blowing from the West to the Northwest at a speed ranging from 60 to 70 km/h, reaching or even exceeding 80 km/h in gusts, are expected. These winds could cause significant sand uplift, reducing visibility. This alert is valid today from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The second BMS from Météo Algérie concerns many provinces including Bejaia, Jijel, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Sétif, Mila, Constantine, M’sila, Djelfa, Biskra and Batna. This alert warns of strong winds from the Northwest blowing at a speed ranging between 60 and 80 km/h, with gusts reaching over 100 km/h. This level 2 meteorological alert has been ongoing since yesterday evening at 9:00 pm and will continue until today at 9:00 pm.
Météo Algérie: 5 provinces on level 3 red alert!
This Thursday, February 29, several weather alerts are ongoing, signaling the persistence of rainfall in various regions of the country. The first BMS places the provinces of Skikda, Annaba, El Tarf, Constantine, Guelma, Souk Ahras, Oum El Bouaghi, Batna, Khenchela, and Tébessa under orange warning for “rain”. According to estimates, rainfall amounts could vary between 30 and 50 mm, with locally accumulations reaching or exceeding 60 mm. This alert is in effect for the entire day until 9:00 pm.
The second BMS concerns the provinces of Bejaia, Jijel, and the North of Sétif and Mila. The forecasts announce higher rainfall amounts, with estimates ranging from 80 to 100 mm, and locally up to 140 mm. This alert is also ongoing until 9:00 pm.
Furthermore, it should be noted that the National Meteorological Office (ONM) has issued a level 3 red alert, signaling exceptionally heavy rain conditions in five provinces of the country. This BMS places Tizi Ouzou, Bejaia, Jijel, as well as the North of Sétif and Mila on red alert, the highest level of alert. The forecasts suggest rainfall up to an impressive total of 80 to 100 mm. This alert will remain in effect until 9:00 am this Thursday.
When an alert reaches the red level, it is crucial that the entire population takes appropriate precautions. It is therefore strongly advised not to travel unless in case of absolute emergency to avoid the risks associated with such extreme weather conditions.
