ALGIERS, Sunday, March 24, 2024 – The court of Hussein Dey (Algiers) today delivered its verdict in the trial of Mohcine Belabbas. The former president of the RCD party has been sentenced to six (6) months in prison.
His lawyer, Me Fetta Sadat, relayed the information this morning on her official Facebook account. She stated that in addition to the prison sentence, the court has also fined Mohcine Belabbas 100,000 Algerian dinars, and ordered him to pay 50,000 Algerian dinars as compensation to the civil party (Gué de Constantine municipality).
During the trial on March 17, the Prosecutor of the Republic had requested a six (6) month prison sentence and a fine of 100,000 Algerian dinars against the political activist. The civil party had requested compensation of 100,000 Algerian dinars.
“The court has therefore simply granted the requests of the Public Ministry,” said Me Fetta Sadat. Mohcine Belabbas has not yet commented on this sentence, which adds to the judicial control he has been subject to since January 10, 2022.
