In recent weeks, the boycott of Israeli products has been gaining popularity worldwide. In France, some large distribution chains are adopting questionable practices to combat this movement, such as label fraud.
Indeed, during their usual shopping trips, customers noticed that the German discounter Aldi was selling Haas avocados, apparently produced in South America, specifically in Chile. However, upon closer examination of the labels, they were surprised to read: “Galilee Export LTD., 2 Hasadna St, Or Yehuda, 6022002, Israel. Country of origin: Israel.” The avocados were clearly imported from Israel.
After Auchan, Aldi, Lidl, and Grand Frais, it is now Franprix’s turn to engage in this label fraud practice regarding its avocados. The chain displays a origin from Morocco and South America, but in reality, these fruits come from Israel.
Pro-Palestinian activists claim that during their investigations, they only found Israeli products labeled as coming from elsewhere, and never the other way around. They accuse these chains of wanting to conceal the origin of products from “Zionist trade.”
Medjool dates are also at the center of this controversy. Indeed, a large quantity of these dates, originating from Israel, are fraudulently labeled as “Algeria” on the shelves of Carrefour in Évry.
However, it is important to note that this variety is not grown in Algeria! In reality, the Medjool date is originally from Morocco and was introduced to Israel, where it was cultivated and then exported to Europe.
Furthermore, it is easy for anyone to notice the deception, as the logo of the Israeli company, Shlomo, is carelessly left in the middle of the crate.
