During an inspection visit in Algiers, on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, the Minister of Commerce, Tayeb Zitouni, expressed his dissatisfaction with the sharp rise in prices, especially for bananas.

Indeed, he expressed his discontent about the recent increase in banana prices in the national market. Zitouni highlighted that this increase is unjustified, especially considering that global prices do not exceed 0.5 dollars. According to him, the cost of production of this product, including margins, should not exceed 200 Algerian dinars.

The Minister of Commerce affirmed the government’s determination to combat speculation that fuels this increase, ensuring strict enforcement of the law to punish those responsible.

He stated, “We will take action and enforce the law to pursue those responsible for this increase.” The Minister also warned against speculative practices that harm price stability and consumer satisfaction.

Tayeb Zitouni justified the price increase by redirecting efforts towards other products, thus leaving room for speculation on bananas. He lamented that some traders took advantage of this situation to exponentially raise prices.

In response to this situation, Zitouni urged his services to react quickly by ordering the seizure of goods sold at exorbitant prices and calling for strict traceability of the products in question. In this regard, he stated, “This is an instruction, at every store where the price is displayed at this rate, you proceed with the seizure and you must track the traceability of this product… It’s speculation and we will take action.”

The Minister of Commerce’s statement reflects the government’s willingness to combat speculation and ensure fair prices for consumers. It highlights the challenges faced in regulating markets and calls for concerted action to ensure the country’s economic stability.
