Among these changes, Hichem Ferhati was appointed consul in Oujda, while Djoudi Belghit was chosen to occupy the position of consul general in Casablanca, which is responsible for coordinating diplomatic missions with Morocco.
These decisions were communicated by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, March 26. According to the official statement, these modifications concern 28 ambassadors, 3 consuls general, and 3 consuls, in accordance with the provisions of Article 92 of the Algerian Constitution.
This reorganization is part of a desire to revitalize the Algerian diplomatic apparatus, with the objective of optimizing the performance of diplomatic action in the face of current challenges and ensuring effective support for the national community abroad, as stated in the ministerial statement.
Nevertheless, this consular reshuffle sounds like a response to the recent diplomatic imbroglio surrounding the Moroccan project of expropriating Algerian real estate, including the site of the former Algerian embassy in Rabat. This project had triggered an impulsive and disproportionate reaction from the Algerian diplomacy before it retracted and declared through its leader Ahmed Attaf that the issue was closed, following revelations on the official exchanges between Morocco and Algeria regarding this expropriation, which was not only announced to the Algerian authorities but also approved by them.
This confirms that despite the unilateral decision by Algiers to break diplomatic relations, the two countries maintain a minimum of exchanges through consular presence, essential to assist the Algerian and Moroccan communities established in each other’s territories.
