ALGIERS, Thursday, March 21, 2024 – Thanks to the recent importation of large quantities of Tunisian sardines, the citizens of Algiers can finally afford “the fish of the poor” at a more or less affordable price.
According to reports we received on-site, sardines were available for 500 Algerian dinars per kilogram in several fish markets in the capital. This is compared to the price of local sardines, which range between 1200 and 1500 DZD/kg.
This was notably the case at Place des Martyrs, at the Alger Fish Market (Angkor Street), and at the Algerian Chamber of Fishing and Aquaculture’s sales point at Bateau Cassé.
In addition to the 500 DZD/kg sardines, these sales points – known as producer-to-consumer – offer dorado at a price of 1250 DZD/kg and red-breasted tilapia at a price of 590 DZD/kg.
Algeria imports 10 tons of sardines from Tunisia
Furthermore, in order to bring down the price of sardines during the month of Ramadan, the Ministry of Fisheries decided to resort to importation. Therefore, Algeria imported a first shipment of 10 tons of sardines from the neighboring country, Tunisia, yesterday.
These initial quantities, according to a ministry official, were distributed to several eastern provinces of the country, including Constantine, Skikda, Sétif, Batna, and other bordering provinces.
The same official assured that the imported fish was fresh and met all conditions for preservation and distribution. Furthermore, he revealed that the next shipments will come from Mauritania.
