Algiers is one of the most important socio-cultural cities in the country, an open-air museum that continues to attract visitors. But a stay in the white city can quickly become very expensive. However, it is entirely possible to enjoy the city and its treasures with a small budget, or even without, while discovering its beauty and charm in the smallest details. The following list summarizes the free activities that can be done in Algiers.
Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa
Perched on the heights of the municipality of Bologhine, 120 meters above sea level, the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa stands majestically at the forefront of Algiers. It is one of the few churches still active in Algeria, welcoming the country’s Christian community, although it is a minority. Sunday masses are still held there, as well as other evangelical rites. On other days of the week, the religious site turns into a tourist site, open to prayer as well. Hundreds of people flock there every day to try to catch a glimpse of the city’s history. A beautiful view of Algiers is also available from the entrance courtyard, but for a better view, you have to climb a little higher, less than a kilometer away, towards the heavenly village, where you will have a complete view of Algiers.
Discover the Casbah
An architectural marvel, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Casbah of Algiers has so much to tell that it’s hard to know where to start. Its narrow winding streets whisper the centuries its walls have witnessed, mosques, houses, and architectural details speak volumes about its multicultural history. Tourist guides are available to help you discover the history of the citadel, however, the best way to feel the spirituality of the place remains to discover it for yourself by wandering through the alleys and being in direct contact with the locals, who sometimes reveal fascinating secrets about the place dating back to antiquity.
Sidi Fredj Port
Located west of Algiers, in the municipality of Staoueli, Sidi Fredj Port became known in Algerian history on July 5, 1830, when French forces landed, marking the beginning of 132 years of colonization for Algeria. This marina is one of the most attractive in the Mediterranean basin with a capacity of over 400 boats. It is perfect for afternoon strolls where you can admire the sea and a piece of the country’s history through its architecture that combines modernism and Algerian traditions.
The Sablettes of Algiers
Located in the heart of the capital, in the municipality of Belouizdad overlooking the Bay of Algiers, the Sablettes promenade offers a breath of fresh air in the city. The Sablettes promenade stretches for 4 km, offering visitors a green space and various entertainment structures. Ideal for children, it also allows adults to relax and walk while enjoying the sea air.
Forest of Baïnem
Ideal for walks, picnics in the open air, and relaxation in nature, the forest of Baïnem, located between the municipalities of Bouzareah, Béni Messous, Raïs Hamidou, and Aïn Benian, is the perfect place to spend a beautiful afternoon with family.
The El Hamma Botanical Garden
Founded by settlers in 1832, it is now considered one of the most important botanical gardens in the world. With its 32-hectare area, it now welcomes families and visitors looking for a green escape in the midst of the crowds, noise, and picturesque buildings of the capital. Located on Mohamed Belouizdad Avenue in the municipality of Algiers, the garden contains many different plant species, as well as sculptures mostly over 100 years old. It is a paradise for botany, art, and leisure lovers. Many famous historical figures mentioned it, such as Albert Camus, Karl Marx, André Gide, and many others. Entry is set at the symbolic price of 100 DA.
