ALGERIAMOROCCOAlgerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf announced on Tuesday, March 26, that the issue of the confiscation of assets from the Algerian embassy in Morocco was “closed.” This, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, after Morocco made a decision considered “appropriate” following Algeria’s reaction.

Previously, Algeria, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had condemned “in the strongest terms” the project to confiscate the premises of the Algerian State Embassy in Morocco, stating that the Algerian government would respond to these “provocations” by “all means it deems appropriate.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had then believed that the Kingdom of Morocco had embarked on “a new escalatory phase in its provocative behaviors towards Algeria.” These provocations were manifested in the project to confiscate the premises of the Algerian Embassy in Morocco.

Furthermore, Algeria, according to the same source, considered that this gesture by the Moroccan authorities constituted an “unqualifiable violation of respect and the duty to protect diplomatic representations of sovereign states sanctified by both international law and custom.”

During a press conference at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Algiers, Ahmed Attaf assured that “Algeria’s sovereignty is in good hands.” He later declared that since Algeria considers Morocco’s decision “appropriate,” the issue of the Embassy is now closed.

Thus ends a new chapter in the series of diplomatic and political crises that characterize the relations between Algeria and Morocco for several years. Will there be a period of calm following this? Nothing is certain.
