Halal imported meat has helped to stabilize the Algerian national market, particularly appreciated for its affordable price of 1200 Algerian dinars per kilogram. However, doubts remain about its authenticity.
Deputy of the diaspora, Abdelwahab Yaakoubi, has called on the Minister of Religious Affairs to provide formal guarantees regarding imported halal meat from France. He denounced manipulations, pointing out cases where the “halal” stamp was placed on pork meat.
Mr. Yaakoubi emphasized the need for rigorous control of imports, especially from France. He pointed out fraudulent practices by certain commercial institutions that, with the complicity of “mosques”, apply the “halal” seal without any on-site control.
According to him, these stamps “are made available to those who do not even know the legal conditions of the rituals” that make meat “halal” and therefore consumable by Muslims.
French products sold in Algeria: what certification is adopted?
Mr. Yaakoubi recalled having raised this issue last year, stating: “I informed you that we have even reached the point of stamping ‘halal’ on pork meat, it is unacceptable that this happens here.”
At the end of 2022, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Wakfs and the Great Mosque of Paris signed a specifications document relating to “halal” certification. The aim was to ensure the conformity of food products exported from France to Algeria.
An order was then issued, entrusting the Abdelhamid Ben Badis Institute, attached to the Great Mosque of Paris, with the mission of issuing this certification.
The Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production also required economic operators to affix the “halal” stamp on the relevant imported foodstuffs, including meat products.
