During the month of March, Algeria managed to rise to the top of the list of natural gas exporting countries to Spain. This success comes after the United States, previously the top supplier, was dethroned following European sanctions against Russia due to its conflict with Ukraine.
According to the latest report from the Spanish newspaper “El Español,” Algerian exports to Spain in March reached 42%, surpassing Russia with 25.7% and the United States with 18.2%.
The renowned newspaper emphasized that Algeria’s first place in the list of natural gas suppliers to Spain this year is attributed to the completion of the “Medgaz” gas pipeline. This project saw a growth of 15.4% up to March compared to the same period the previous year, reaching 25.8 terawatt hours (TWh).
Maintaining the dominant position despite the decrease in Spanish imports
Despite a 6.6% decrease in Spanish natural gas imports last March, Algeria remained at the top of Madrid’s supplier list this year, with a market share of 33.1%. The United States and Russia follow with 24.5% and 18.2% respectively, according to data from the Spanish newspaper.
Algeria has therefore consolidated its position as the main natural gas supplier to Spain, demonstrating its ability to meet the energy needs of its European neighbor.
Algeria’s remarkable performance in the Spanish natural gas market opens up new opportunities for partnership and cooperation in the energy sector. With a growing demand for natural gas in Europe, Algeria could strengthen its position as a reliable and strategic supplier.
In conclusion, ongoing investments in the Algerian energy sector, especially in the development of gas infrastructure, will help support export growth and consolidate bilateral relations between Algeria and Spain.
