During a meeting at the UN Security Council, Algeria strongly denounced the policy of famine imposed by the Israeli occupier in Gaza, describing this strategy as a “flagrant violation of international law.”
Indeed, Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, emphasized the seriousness of the situation in Gaza, where residents have been facing a barbaric aggression since October 7. He deplored the use of famine as a weapon of war by the Zionist occupier, causing inhumane distress to the population.
Furthermore, estimates from the Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC) Framework predict that all residents of Gaza, totaling 2.2 million people, will face high levels of acute food insecurity by the end of February 2024, the most critical level in the world.
Despite the efforts of humanitarian workers and decisions made by the Council, the situation has not seen significant improvement in the absence of a ceasefire. The international community is thus left feeling powerless and desperate in the face of this unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
The disastrous consequences of the war on Gaza have also led to a complete paralysis of commercial activities, compromising the delivery of humanitarian aid. The World Food Program for aid delivery in the North of Gaza has even been suspended for security reasons.
Amar Bendjama emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, stating that inaction is tantamount to complicity in the crime of famine and massacres against the Palestinian populations. He called on the Security Council to act swiftly to end this tragedy.
In conclusion, this Security Council meeting, held at the request of Algeria, Guyana, Switzerland, and Slovenia, aims to examine the state of food security in Gaza and raise awareness of the humanitarian catastrophe that has been ongoing in the region since October 7, 2023, as a result of continued Zionist aggression.
