In a remarkable medical advance, the CHU Nedir Mohamed of Tizi-Ouzou recorded the first case of a patient with blindness due to artery occlusion who regained vision.
This success marks a significant advancement in the management of eye vascular emergencies in Algeria, according to specialists at the CHU. Furthermore, the intervention was made possible through exceptional coordination between the ophthalmology department and the neuro-vascular unit of the CHU of Tizi-Ouzou.
The patient was a 38-year-old man who experienced a sudden loss of vision. The severity of the situation was such that doctors deemed a rapid intervention crucial to prevent permanent damage to vision.
In this regard, the major challenge was to meet the critical time constraint of 4 hours and 30 minutes after the onset of symptoms to administer treatment.
The doctors at CHU Nedir Mohamed have made a historic medical breakthrough in Algeria.
This medical feat highlights the complexity of managing ophthalmological and neurological vascular emergencies. It underscores the need for increased awareness of symptoms and the importance of timely intervention to prevent serious consequences.
This exceptional case directly resulted from the first thematic day of neuro-ophthalmology held at the CHU of Tizi-Ouzou a week earlier.
This day brought together a significant number of Algerian doctors specializing in neurology and ophthalmology, with the participation of world experts from France, the Netherlands, Iran, and Tunisia, sharing their knowledge and contributing to the improvement of local medical practices.
The event highlights the potential of international collaboration and continuous training to address complex medical challenges. This success also demonstrates that even in rapidly evolving medical environments, the quality of care can compete with global standards.
The successful thrombolysis of this patient marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s medical history and emphasizes the ongoing need to invest in specialized training and medical equipment to provide optimal care to the population.
