The bureau of the National People’s Assembly has received a proposal for a law regarding the protection of elderly people abandoned by their children in nursing homes. The new text provides for severe sanctions against these children, including up to 6 years in prison and a fine of 10 million centimes (about 500 €).

Initiated by a group of deputies, this draft law aims to ensure the social protection of elderly people, promote family values, and combat social injustice.

It is worth noting that this draft law amends law No. 10-12 of December 2010 concerning the protection of elderly people. The new version obliges adult children to assume the legal and financial responsibility for the maintenance of their parents.

The authors of the draft law emphasize the importance of the moral and religious duty to take care of one’s parents, especially in Algeria, a Muslim country. They affirm that the State must guarantee elderly people a dignified and respectful life, especially after dedicating their lives to the education and well-being of their children.

This draft law also aims to alleviate the financial and economic burden on the State by further empowering adult children to take responsibility for their parents. It encourages family values and strengthens intergenerational bonds.

In conclusion, the adoption of such a project would constitute a significant advancement in the protection of elderly people in Algeria.
