The National Tribunal for Crimes Related to Information Technology has sentenced Amir Boukhors, also known as “Amine Dz,” to 3 years in prison and a fine of 200,000 DZD for defamation on social media. Boukhors was judged for spreading false information that endangered public security and order, resulting in the death of two policemen in Naâma. The tribunal also appointed the representative of the Treasury as a civil party.
The accused was judged in absentia following a complaint filed by the defamed policemen, causing harm to their reputation. It is worth noting that Boukhors has several previous convictions in absentia for various charges, following investigations opened after the extradition of fugitives to Algerian authorities.
The sentencing of Boukhors sends a clear message about the responsibility and consequences of actions committed online. Authorities will continue to prosecute those who break the law, even on the internet.
In conclusion, this case highlights the importance of justice adapting to the new challenges posed by information and communication technologies. Fighting online defamation is essential to protect society and maintain public order.
