Enugu Rangers have successfully climbed to the top of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) table after securing a 2-1 away victory against Heartland of Owerri. This achievement marks the first time since their last league title win in 2017 that the Flying Antelopes have reached the top spot in the standings.
With this crucial win, Enugu Rangers now have a total of 48 points, surpassing second-placed Lobi Stars who have 47 points. Lobi Stars were only able to secure a 1-1 draw against Bayelsa United in their recent match in Lafia, allowing Enugu Rangers to overtake them in the league standings.
The Week 27 game between Enugu Rangers and Heartland took place at the Awka Township Stadium. Enugu Rangers took the lead in the 37th minute through a goal from Emmanuel Onyebuchi, and later extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Kalu Nweke in the 54th minute. Although Heartland managed to score a goal in added time, it was not enough to earn them any points from the match.
Meanwhile, a surprising result occurred in Jos where Akwa United defeated Plateau United 2-1. Gerome Hoetchou and Sani Suleiman were the heroes for Akwa United, with Hoetchou scoring in the 10th minute and Suleiman converting a penalty in the 91st minute to secure the victory. Despite Plateau United equalizing in the 77th minute, Akwa United remained determined and ultimately clinched all three points.
In other matches, Kwara United emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Enyimba in Ilorin, while Katsina United also secured a 2-1 victory against Abia Warriors. Doma United and Gombe United played to a 1-1 draw, and Kano Pillars defeated Sporting Lagos by a score of 1-0.
Enugu Rangers’ resurgence to the top of the NPFL table showcases their determination and skill as a team. With their recent performance and positive momentum, they are poised to continue their success in the league as they aim for another title victory. Their fans and supporters will undoubtedly be thrilled by their current position and hopeful for more victories in the upcoming matches.
