Airtel Nigeria has announced that 9.2 million of its customers have submitted their National Identification Number (NIN) for verification ahead of the February 28 deadline imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for all unlinked lines to be fully barred. The parent company, Airtel Africa, disclosed this information in its nine-month financial statement.

Although Airtel Nigeria has stated that it does not have a significant number of customers without NIN that could affect its revenue, the company confirmed that those who had submitted their NINs are now being verified. As of November 2023, Airtel had 61.3 million customers and controlled 27.5 percent of the Nigerian market. Additionally, 4.5 million customers have already been verified since the directive was issued in December 2023. Airtel expressed its concerns that some of its customers might be affected by the directive on February 28 and assured that it is working with the telecoms regulator to minimize the risk of service disruption.

Last December, the NCC issued a directive requiring mobile network operators in the country to fully bar all phone lines for which subscribers have not submitted their NINs by February 28, 2024. Additionally, those who have submitted their NINs but have not been verified are also to be fully barred.

Furthermore, Airtel Nigeria was recently awarded the designation of “Telecoms Company of the Year” by the New Telegraph newspapers at the annual New Telegraph Award ceremony held in Lagos. The award aimed to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant social and economic impacts in Nigeria, while serving as ambassadors of selflessness, patriotism, and excellence.

In response to the recognition, Femi Adeniran, the Director of Corporate Communications and CSR at Airtel Nigeria, expressed the company’s appreciation for being acknowledged by a respected media organization for its commitment to delivering cutting-edge services, fostering innovation, and consistently exceeding customer expectations.

The company is proud of its customers who have taken the necessary steps to comply with the NCC directive and appreciates their cooperation. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to providing its customers with top-notch telecommunications services and will continue to work closely with the NCC to ensure compliance with industry regulations while minimizing any potential disruption to its services.

Overall, Airtel Nigeria is pleased to have reached a significant number of its customers with the NIN verification process and looks forward to providing continued support and assistance to those who have not yet submitted their NINs ahead of the February 28 deadline.
