An initiative in Comoros aims to increase agricultural productivity and food security through subsidies on agricultural inputs. This development was discussed at a workshop held on February 29, 2024, at the Retaj Hotel in Moroni.
The goal of the project is to create a national policy on subsidizing agricultural inputs based on national and regional development strategies and documents, such as the Comoros Emergent Plan (PCE) and the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP). This policy aims to promote the development of agriculture, especially in targeted sectors.
Dr. Abdou Katibou, a consultant recruited through an international competition, is tasked with analyzing the profitability of the proposed agricultural input subsidy program and providing guidelines for its implementation. The consultant’s duties include proposing a subsidy mechanism tailored to the Comorian context and suggesting which crops should be subsidized.
The proposed policy is expected to lead to an increase in agricultural productivity, improved food security, and economic growth that benefits the poor. Subsidies on agricultural inputs can significantly reduce costs borne by farmers, thereby enhancing their performance.
The project is funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and aligns with the bank’s goal of promoting sustainable agricultural development in Africa.
Overall, this initiative in Comoros represents a significant step towards enhancing agricultural production, ensuring food security, and supporting economic growth, particularly for vulnerable populations. By implementing targeted subsidies on agricultural inputs, the project aims to address key challenges faced by farmers and contribute to the overall development of the agricultural sector in the country.
