Following the confirmation of Governor Dapo Abiodun as the winner of the 2023 governorship election in Ogun State by the Supreme Court, there is a renewed focus on his ability to provide good governance and the much-needed dividends of democracy to the people of the state. His administration’s pace of governance during his second term in office has been criticized for moving at a snail’s pace due to legal distractions from the election tribunal. However, the governor has expressed commitment and a determination to lead Ogun State to new heights, stating that his administration is focused on implementing sustainable legacies that will create jobs, foster prosperity, and improve the welfare of the citizens.
Despite the promises made during his first term, Governor Abiodun’s impact has not been felt by the residents of Ogun State. Infrastructure remains a key area of concern, particularly in road construction, rural development, and urban facelift. The state is grappling with dilapidated infrastructure and a multitude of abandoned projects left behind by the previous administration. A major concern is the 32km Sango-Ojodu road, which was originally started by the previous administration and later abandoned, causing public anticipation for the Abiodun administration to continue the project. However, the road is in a state of disrepair, and recent activities have revealed that the overhead bridge at Ijoko, another part of the project, has begun to collapse.
Furthermore, roads in prominent areas like Adigbe-Opako, Moore-Obantoko, Ojere-Alagada, and others have become eyesores due to a lack of maintenance. Transportation, public works, and other infrastructure-related projects have suffered, leaving residents and motorists frustrated. The absence of a working transport system, dysfunctional street lights, and the deteriorating state of schools across the state underscore the urgent need for infrastructural development and good governance.
While the governor’s return to office was met with stiff opposition, it is evident that his administration has fallen short of expectations, leaving residents and party members disillusioned. The lack of progress on uncompleted projects and the failure to address crucial infrastructure issues have led to frustration and criticism.
It is imperative for Governor Abiodun to take significant steps towards fulfilling his campaign promises and addressing the critical infrastructure needs of the state. The challenges facing Ogun State require urgent attention and effective governance to bring about the necessary improvements in infrastructure and public services. As a leader, the governor must rise to the occasion and work diligently to fulfill the expectations of the people who elected him.
