The 2nd All Africa Music Awards- AFRIMA Music Business Summit is set to be held on Monday, February 12th, 2024. This summit is being organized in partnership with the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Record Label Proprietors Initiative (RELPI), Association of Music Artist Managers of Nigeria (AMAMN), and Music Publishers Association of Nigeria (MPAN).
The primary objective of the 2nd summit is to refine and consolidate the policy recommendations put forward by a designated 4-man legal team. The focus of the summit will be on the rebirth of the music, entertainment, arts, culture, and hospitality sector/industry in Nigeria. The event will commence at 6:00 PM Nigerian time and will be conducted virtually via Zoom.
The President of AFRIMA, Mike Dada, expressed his anticipation for the attendance of key stakeholders from the Nigerian music industry. These stakeholders include musicians/artistes, record labels, A&R, producers, promoters, artiste’s managers, brands, songwriters, DJs & video vixens, video directors, equipment production and rental companies, publishing companies, streaming service companies, entertainment lawyers, royalty companies, choreographers/dancers, entertainment/music journalists and media, culture and music enthusiasts, and other supporting professionals.
In regards to the upcoming meeting, the President of PMAN, Pretty Okafor emphasized the importance of continual education and engagement for all sectoral bodies within the music industry. The purpose of such engagement is to familiarize all players with their roles, responsibilities, obligations, and benefits.
Chinedu Chukwuji, who leads RELPI, reiterated the goal of ensuring a conducive environment for the recording industry in Nigeria to thrive. The Summit would provide a collective voice for the Nigerian recording industry on issues of policy, protection and enforcement of the intellectual property rights of its members.
The first Emergency Meeting of the Nigerian Music Industry was held on October 1st, 2023, under the theme, ‘Identification of Internal and External Regulatory Mechanisms to Smoothen the Working Relationship among Various Stakeholders and Subgroups in the Music Industry.’
During the first Summit, participants came to various resolutions and action plans such as the need for well-crafted laws and regulations that can provide a stable framework for the industry, protect the rights of artistes, creators, record labels and foster investment, and a vibrant music ecosystem. It was also agreed upon that there is a need for a legal framework that institutionalizes minimum entry requirements for players in the industry, including musicians and record labels, to discourage quackery, mediocrity, and substandardization in the music ecosystem.
The first Summit saw the attendance of over 70 industry players. This included veteran music producer and CEO Kennis Communications, Dr. Kenny Ogungbe, AFRIMA President, Mike Dada, Sunny Neji, Pretty Okafor (PMAN President), Olumide Mustapha (Chairman, MPAN), Sijuade Adedokun, (President AMAMN), Chinedu Chukwuji, (National Coordinator, RELPI), Mayo Ayilaran, (DG/CEO, MCSN), foremost female drummer, Ara Olamuyiwa, Laolu Akins, Joel Ajayi, Yinka Obebe, Justin Ige, Kesse Jabari, Louis Udoh, Tayo Eleshin, Precious Obeahon, and others.
In conclusion, the upcoming 2nd emergency summit for Nigerian Music Industry stakeholders is eagerly anticipated by key players in the industry, as it aims to address critical challenges and refine policy recommendations. It is expected to further consolidate and promote the growth and development of the music, arts, and entertainment industry in Nigeria.
