The mandate of Tunisia at the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC-AU) comes to an end today, March 31, 2024, after two years during which the country held one of the two seats allocated to the North Africa region within this important African structure, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad announced in a statement released on Sunday.
“Task that Tunisia undertook with the same determination and commitment that have always characterized its foreign policy and contributions to international peace and security in general and in Africa in particular,” the statement said.
As it leaves the PSC-AU, which is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, Tunisia renews its commitment to continue working alongside the new member states, as well as the officials of the African Union and its various institutions and structures in order to prevent conflicts, restore peace, support the foundations of stability in Africa, and dedicate efforts to development and reconstruction.
Tunisia was elected to the Council for the period 2022-2024, during the elections held at the 40th session of the African Union Executive Council, held in Addis Ababa in February 2022. This was the second time it sat on the PSC-AU since its creation in 2004.
“Throughout these two years, during which the world and Africa have faced unprecedented challenges at all levels, Tunisia has consistently been a positive force for proposals, continuing to work to strengthen common African action, cooperation and solidarity among the various brotherly African countries and to promote a new concept of collective security and common destiny based on the universal values and principles of the United Nations Charter but also of the African Union Constitutive Charter,” the statement said.
During its mandate, Tunisia also worked to uphold the path of political and peaceful resolution of conflicts, strengthen preventive diplomacy, and enhance the role and responsibility of the Council in maintaining security and peace on the continent.
During its presidency of the Council in April 2023, Tunisia put forward its vision to find peaceful, just, and sustainable solutions to different issues, aimed at making Africa a safe, stable, and prosperous continent.
It also sought to strengthen the role of the Council and support its efforts to prevent conflicts, establish peace, support the pillars of stability in Africa, and dedicate efforts to development and reconstruction.
The Tunisian presidency program included a series of meetings dedicated to monitoring reconciliation efforts in Libya, supporting countries undergoing transition processes, evaluating the progress of the African Union transition mission in Somalia, and a meeting on progress in the political transition processes in Mali, Burkina Faso, Sudan, and Guinea.
Furthermore, Tunisia included on the PSC-AU agenda for April 2023 several topics of common interest, such as strategic air transport and cybersecurity in Africa, raising awareness of the importance of preventing mines, genocide, and hate crimes on the continent.
The hosting by Tunisia of the 15th annual Council retreat in November 2023 was an opportunity during which the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Nabil Ammar, highlighted the importance of equipping the PSC-AU with the necessary tools to achieve adequate solutions to African problems.
In December 2023, Tunisia also hosted a meeting of experts dedicated to discussing a common African position for the application of international law in the field of information and communication technology in cyberspace.
