The Uganda Hippos have once again sparked excitement in the country’s international football scene after a stunning 2-1 victory over Nigeria in their opening game of the All Africa Games in Accra, Ghana. Both teams qualified for the games after reaching the quarterfinal stage of the 2023 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The Hippos had a score to settle with the Flying Eagles after losing to them in the 2021 Afcon U-20 final. In a thrilling match, the Hippos emerged victorious, breaking records and showing their potential as an emerging force in African football.

Despite losing to Nigeria in the quarterfinal last year, the Hippos turned the tables with a goal from Usama Arafat and a thunderous strike from Ivan Irinimbabazi. Coach Morley Byekwaso expressed his satisfaction with the win, highlighting the team’s growth and determination to succeed on the continent.

Eight players from the Afcon fixture last year featured in the win against Nigeria, showcasing the team’s continuity and resilience. Uganda will now face reigning Afcon U20 champions Senegal in their next match, setting up an exciting encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium.
