African artists receive BRIT Awards nominations in 2024

The BRITs, established in 1977, are the most important event in British music. The 2024 Grammy nominees Burna Boy and Asake were both shortlisted for the Best International Artist category, alongside American stars like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, SZA, Olivia Rodrigo, and Lana Del Rey. Rema also secured a nomination for Best International Song with ‘Calm Down’, along with Libianca and Tyla.

One change for this year’s awards is the increase in the number of nominees for both Artist of the Year and International Artist of the Year from five to 10, aimed at improving representation and inclusion.

RAYE received the most nominations, with seven nominations, including Artist of the Year. Central Cee and J Hus both received four nods, while Dua Lipa followed closely with three.

BRIT Committee chair Damian Christian stated, “This year’s BRIT nominees really highlight the incredible breadth and diversity within British music. From breaking artists to returning greats, and with artists spanning so many genres, this year’s shortlist really feels like it has it all. I’d like to congratulate RAYE on her record-breaking seven nominations, as well as every other artist up for an award. I hope to see you all on the night!”

The full list of nominees is as follows:

– Artist of the Year: Featuring Arlo Parks, Central Cee, Dave, Dua Lipa, Fred again.., J Hus, Jessie Ware, Little Simz, Olivia Dean, and Raye.

– Group of the Year: Including Blur, Chase & Status, Headie One & K-Trap, Jungle, and Young Fathers.

– Best New Artist: Mahalia, Olivia Dean, PinkPantheress, Raye, Yussef Dayes.

– Song of the Year: Featuring nominated songs such as ‘Miracle’, ‘Prada’, ‘Let Go’, ‘Sprinter’, ‘Dance The Night’, ‘Eyes Closed’, ‘Who Told You’, ‘Strangers’, ‘Wish You The Best’, ‘Boy’s A Liar’, ‘Escapism’, ‘Dancing Is Healing’, ‘Firebabe’, ‘React’, ‘Messy In Heaven’.

– Mastercard Album of the Year: Including albums by Blur, J Hus, Little Simz, Raye, and Young Fathers.

– International Artist of the Year and International Song of the Year: Featuring nominees such as Asake, Burna Boy, Caroline Polachek, CMAT, Kylie Minogue, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Taylor Swift, and many others.

There are also categories open to public vote such as Alternative/Rock Act, Pop Act, R&B Act, Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act, and Dance Act. A Rising Star category was also previously announced.

The BRITs, as the leading British music event, continue to celebrate and recognize the diversity and talent within the music industry.
