Gbenga Elegbeleye, the Chairman of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), has announced that the newly launched Under 17 Youth League will play a crucial role in identifying and grooming players for international competitions. He made this statement during the final of the inaugural edition of the youth league in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Elegbeleye explained that the primary objective of the league is to provide a platform for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to scout and select talented young players for future international tournaments. As the 2nd Vice-Chairman of the NFF, he emphasized that the league will exclusively cater to players in the youth category.

The NPFL clubs will have youth teams at the U-17 level, serving as feeder teams for the senior clubs. Elegbeleye highlighted the importance of allowing players to progress through the ranks, starting from the U-15 level before transitioning to the U-17 and eventually to the senior teams. He cited Plateau United FC as an example of a club successfully integrating players from the U-17 team into the senior squad.

Elegbeleye expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the last U-17 World Cup, attributing it to a lack of proper planning. He believes that the introduction of the youth league will address the existing gaps in player development and enhance the country’s chances of securing a spot in future international competitions.

The presence of former national team players such as Patrick Pascal, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, and Seyi Olofinjana as ambassadors and role models in the league is intended to inspire and motivate the young players. Elegbeleye expressed confidence that the involvement of these ex-internationals will have a positive impact on the development of the youth players.

The introduction of the youth league marks a significant step towards revitalizing youth football in Nigeria and creating a pathway for talented players to pursue a successful career in professional football. Elegbeleye reaffirmed the commitment to hosting future editions of the Premier League U-17 tournament, underscoring the importance of nurturing young talent and preparing them for the challenges of competitive football.

In conclusion, Elegbeleye’s vision for the Under 17 Youth League is grounded in creating a sustainable and efficient system for talent identification and player development in Nigerian football. The league serves as a vital platform for nurturing young athletes and grooming them for successful careers in both domestic and international competitions. With the support of key stakeholders and the participation of experienced professionals, the youth league is poised to shape the future of Nigerian football and elevate the country’s standing on the global stage.
