The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is celebrating Tobi Amusan’s groundbreaking performance at the Astana Indoor Meet, where she set a new African record in the 60 metres hurdles. The AFN believes that this achievement is a sign of promising things to come not only at the Africa Games but also at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Amusan, who currently holds the World Record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds, made headlines by clocking an impressive 7.77 seconds in the 60-metre hurdles at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan. This feat not only secured her victory but also marked a new African women’s indoor record, erasing the longstanding record of 7.82 seconds set by compatriot Glory Alozie in 1999.
AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, expressed his confidence in Amusan and her ability to represent Nigeria both on and off the track. He emphasized the importance of staying focused and completing all out-of-competition tests, especially in anticipation of the Olympic Games.
Okowa revealed that the federation has already outlined plans for athletes and coaches in preparation for the upcoming Africa Games in Ghana and the Paris 2024 Olympics, underscoring the significance of the new athletics season. He also highlighted the impressive performances of other Nigerian athletes, including Temitope Adeshina, Godson Brume, and Favour Ofili, expressing pride in their accomplishments and wishing them continued success and protection from injury.
In conclusion, Okowa emphasized that Amusan’s record-breaking performance reflects her hard work and dedication and predicts a bright future for her career. He shared his unwavering belief in her ability to achieve even greater milestones in the years to come.
