The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is proud to announce Tobi Amusan’s incredible performance at the Astana Indoor Meet, where she set a new African record in the 60-meter hurdles. This achievement has sparked excitement for what is to come at the Africa Games and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Amusan, who currently holds the World Record in the 100m hurdles at 12.12 seconds, made headlines by clocking an impressive 7.77 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan. This not only secured her victory but also marked the erasure of the longstanding record of 7.82 seconds set by her compatriot, Glory Alozie, in 1999.
AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, expressed his confidence in Amusan’s performance, stating that she has proven herself as a true Nigerian ambassador both on and off the track. He emphasized the need for Amusan to stay focused and continue with her out-of-competition tests, as the year holds significant events such as the Olympic Games for which he believes Amusan will deliver big for Team Nigeria.
Okowa assured that the federation has already laid out plans for the athletes and their coaches ahead of the Africa Games in March and other forthcoming competitions, including the Paris 2024 Olympics. As the president of the Africa Region 2 Athletics body, he expressed satisfaction with the performances of Nigerian athletes such as Temitope Adeshina, Godson Brume, and Favour Ofili, and encouraged them to maintain their momentum while also praying for their protection from any form of injury.
Amusan’s remarkable performance is a testament to her hard work and dedication. Okowa believes that this is just the beginning for her and has no doubt that she will continue to achieve great milestones in her career.
This record-breaking achievement by Amusan has undoubtedly brought pride and hope for Nigerian athletics. It serves as a strong indication of the potential for success of Nigerian athletes in upcoming events such as the Africa Games and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The AFN is committed to supporting and nurturing the talents of its athletes, ensuring that they have the necessary resources and support to compete at the highest levels. The federation’s encouragement and support for Amusan and other Nigerian athletes will undoubtedly pave the way for future successes on the global stage. The record-breaking performance at the Astana Indoor Meet has ignited a sense of optimism and belief in the capabilities of Nigerian athletes, providing a solid foundation for continued success in the future.
