Former Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr, has expressed confidence in the mental strength and fighting spirit of the Super Eagles players as they prepare to face Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions in the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Abidjan. The upcoming clash between the two teams will reignite their longstanding rivalry, with Cameroon hoping to break Nigeria’s recent dominance over them at the AFCON.
The last time Cameroon defeated Nigeria at the AFCON was in the final of the 2000 edition, where they emerged victorious after a penalty shootout. However, the Eagles have since emerged triumphant in their meetings in 2004 and 2019.
Rohr commended the toughness and determination displayed by the Cameroonian team, particularly their ability to secure qualification for the knockout stage. Despite this, he emphasized that the majority of the Nigerian players possess the essential qualities necessary to defeat the five-time AFCON winners.
In a video interview shared by former BBC reporter Osasu Obayiuwana, Rohr encouraged the Nigerian players to believe in their strength and draw inspiration from their previous victory over Cameroon in 2019. He highlighted the fighting spirit and mental strength displayed by both teams, expressing confidence in Nigeria’s ability to qualify for the next round.
While acknowledging the challenges that the Eagles will face against Cameroon, Rohr noted that the Cameroonian team still grapples with defensive and goalkeeping issues. He stressed the importance of discipline, solidarity, and a fighting spirit in overcoming such obstacles, urging the Nigerian players to utilize their strengths to their advantage.
In conclusion, Rohr admitted that the upcoming match will be difficult but remained optimistic about Nigeria’s chances of emerging victorious. He reiterated his belief in the capabilities of the Nigerian players and their potential to secure a positive result against Cameroon.
