The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will have their captain, Vincent Aboubakar, available for selection for their upcoming AFCON 2023 round of 16 match against Nigeria’s Super Eagles. Aboubakar had missed Cameroon’s group games due to an injury sustained in training just before the start of the tournament, but he has since recovered and is ready to join his team on the field.
According to reports from Cameroon’s media outlet Equinoxe Tv, Aboubakar participated in an intense 90-minute training session with the team on Wednesday, indicating that he is fit and ready to play. Additionally, forward Clinton Njie has also recovered from injury and is available for selection, providing a boost to the team’s attacking options.
Aboubakar has a strong track record in the AFCON, having finished as the top scorer at the 2021 tournament held in Cameroon with eight goals. In his club career, he has scored four goals and made one assist in 12 games for Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas. In international play, Aboubakar has only scored once in his two appearances against the Eagles, with the goal coming in a 1-1 draw in 2017 during the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
Cameroon will be seeking their first AFCON victory against the Eagles since 2000 when they face off on Saturday. Despite defeating Nigeria on penalties at the 2000 tournament, Cameroon has suffered losses to the Eagles at the 2004 and 2019 editions. With Aboubakar’s return to the lineup, the Indomitable Lions will be looking to reverse that trend and secure a crucial win in the knockout stage of the tournament.
