High jumper, Temitope Adeshina, achieved a historic feat in the United States yesterday by breaking the national high jump record that had been held by Doreen Amata since 2016. This remarkable accomplishment has sparked optimism and high expectations for Adeshina’s future in the world of athletics.
Adeshina, who is a member of the Texas Tech School athletics team, made her second appearance in competitive meets in the U.S. at the Corky Classic in Texas. She successfully cleared the height of 1.96m, surpassing Amata’s previous indoor and outdoor records of 1.93m and 1.95m, respectively.
Previously, Adeshina narrowly missed the opportunity to compete at the World Championships in Budapest due to her previous personal best of 1.83m. However, with her consistent and impressive performances, she is now on track to potentially achieve a podium finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her 1.96m jump is just below the qualification standard for the Olympics, indicating that she is well-positioned to make her mark on the international stage.
During the Corky Classic, Adeshina began her day by clearing 1.85m, followed by 1.88m, before ultimately achieving the remarkable 1.96m jump, which set a new national record for Nigeria.
Chief Tonobok Okowa, the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), expressed his admiration and praise for Adeshina’s outstanding performance. He emphasized the significance of her achievement, stating that it signifies a promising future for the athlete as Nigeria prepares for the Africa Games in Ghana and the Olympics in Paris. Okowa expressed his confidence in Adeshina’s potential to further improve upon her current record and continue her trajectory as a world-class athlete.
Adeshina’s historic jump has not only brought pride to Nigeria but has also signaled a positive and hopeful outlook for her future in international athletics competitions.
