Otto Addo has been re-appointed as the head coach of the Black Stars by the Ghana Football Association (GFA). This decision was officially confirmed by both Borussia Dortmund, the Bundesliga club where Addo currently works as a talent coach, and the GFA on Friday.
In a statement released by Borussia Dortmund, it was announced that Addo would be leaving the club in the summer to take up his new role as coach of the Ghanaian national team. Dortmund wished him the best of luck in this exciting new chapter of his career and thanked him for his contributions while at the club.
Addo’s first task as head coach will be to lead the Black Stars in an international friendly match against Nigeria’s Super Eagles on March 22, 2024, in Marrakech, Morocco. Following the friendly, Addo will return to Dortmund to formally hand over his responsibilities before officially assuming the role of head coach of the Ghana national team in May of this year.
Addo previously served as the head coach of the Black Stars during their successful World Cup qualification campaign for Qatar 2022, which included a victory over the Super Eagles of Nigeria. However, he left the role after the team was eliminated in the group stage of the tournament. His former assistant, Chris Hughton, took over as head coach and led the team to qualification for the AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire.
Despite the AFCON qualification, the Black Stars had a disappointing outing at the tournament, crashing out in the group stage. As a result, Hughton was relieved of his duties by the GFA, paving the way for Addo’s return to the helm of the team.
Addo’s re-appointment as head coach of the Black Stars marks a new chapter for both him and the team. With his experience and knowledge of Ghanaian football, he will be looking to build a successful squad and lead the team to future success on the international stage. The GFA and fans of the Black Stars will be hoping that Addo’s second stint as head coach will bring about positive results and help the team achieve their goals in upcoming competitions.
