The well-known Nollywood actress, Victoria Inyama, recently opened up about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her estranged husband, Godwin Okrim. According to her, Okrim would often transfer his aggression onto her whenever his favorite football club, Manchester United, performed poorly. This resulted in physical violence towards her whenever the Red Devils lost a match.
In a candid interview with Chude Jideonwo, Inyama revealed that she is still dealing with the trauma to this day. She admitted that she not only developed a deep disdain for the football club, but also associates their losses with the beatings she endured from her ex-husband.
In her own words, she expressed, “I hate Man Utd, ehn. The number of beatings wey dem beat me because Man United lose match ehn.” She went on to explain that even now, whenever she watches a football match and Manchester United loses, she experiences a sense of relief, knowing that it could have been a day of abuse if she were still with her ex-husband. She also mentioned that her son is aware of the situation and finds humor in it.
Inyama’s brave revelation sheds light on the issue of domestic violence and how it can intertwine with other aspects of a person’s life, in this case, the world of sports. Her story serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of abuse and the importance of speaking out about such experiences.
By sharing her personal ordeal, Inyama has become an advocate for women who are survivors of domestic violence. Her courage in speaking out about her past demonstrates the strength and resilience of those who have endured similar hardships. It is a call to action for society to continue supporting and empowering individuals who have faced abuse, and to work towards creating a world free from violence.
