In Mityana District, a father is currently in police custody for a gruesome crime that left one of his children dead and two others injured. Sulaiman Kasozi, 40, who resides in Kikuutanfufu, reportedly carried out the horrifying act around 2:00 am on Monday while his victims were asleep. The victims of this tragic incident are Edie Bukenya, 11, who tragically lost his life, Sulaiman Kasozi Junior, 9, and Hamdani Muwonge, 5, who are currently recovering from stab wounds.
The mother of the victims, Ms. Dina Ariba, recounted the horrifying events that unfolded that night. She mentioned that she was awoken by Kasozi’s alarm, claiming that thieves had attacked them. Upon investigating further, she found her husband holding a machete that appeared to have been recently cleaned. Kasozi was acting strangely and tried to prevent Ariba from entering the children’s bedroom, falsely claiming that they had been killed by intruders. When she finally managed to enter the room, she discovered her son Bukenya deceased and the other two children injured and in need of urgent medical attention. Ariba raised an alarm that attracted neighbors who rushed the victims to Gombe General Hospital. Unfortunately, Bukenya’s body was taken to the hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Local leaders intervened and handed Kasozi over to Kibibi Police Station to protect him from a vengeful mob. Ariba also revealed that her husband had been struggling with debts, and their family home was at risk of being seized by creditors. She speculated that Kasozi may have committed the heinous act in a bid to garner sympathy from their lenders. With debts amounting to Shs3 million, which he could not repay after borrowing Shs1 million initially, Kasozi may have been driven to drastic measures.
Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, confirmed that the suspect would be transferred to Mityana Central Police Station for further handling of the case. The incident is part of a worrying trend highlighted in the 2023 Police Crime Report, which revealed a 15% increase in cases of murder by hacking compared to the previous year, with a total of 257 cases recorded.
The community in Mityana is left shocked and devastated by this tragic event. The authorities are working to ensure that justice is served for the victims and that appropriate measures are taken to prevent such atrocities from happening again. The surviving children are receiving medical care, and efforts are being made to provide them with the necessary support and assistance during this difficult time. The entire community is mourning the loss of young Bukenya and praying for the swift recovery of his siblings who were caught in this senseless act of violence.
