This work, part of the documentary publications for the year 2023 of the High Commission for Former Resistance Fighters and Former Members of the Liberation Army, aims to support historical research efforts to enrich national memory, the High Commission stated in a presentation note.

The objective of this new publication is to highlight the specificity of the modernizing reformist discourse in Morocco, as the intellectual productions of the Moroccan elite, “Ahl al hal wal-‘akd” (the people who bind and loose), have been shaped by three factors according to Moroccan historical literature.

These factors include the internal situation of Morocco in the first place, then interactions with the Western European world, and finally the openness to experiences and projects of the elite in the eastern Arab world, it was noted.

In order to clarify the subject and outline its details as well as its theses and data, Abdellah El Haddad divided his research into seven chapters.

The first chapter deals with the concept of reform, its contexts, and its meanings in the Arab-Muslim cultural framework. The second chapter studies the Moroccan intellectual elite in terms of education, while the third focuses on the productions of the intellectual elite, its genres, and classifications.

In the fourth chapter, the researcher examines examples of projects presented by the Moroccan intellectual elite and the contexts that generated this flow of projects. The fifth chapter is dedicated to the study of economic and financial reform projects, while the sixth addresses administrative and political reform during this period.

In the seventh chapter, the researcher engages in a comparative study of the eastern elite’s vision on their reform projects and that of the Moroccan elite which focused on education.

This academic work, with its strong scientific and documentary content, aims to be a reference of paramount importance and essential for any research on the history of reformist thought in Morocco during the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, the presentation note added.
