The U.S. Ambassador to the Comoros, based in Madagascar, led a delegation, including a senior official from East Africa, in a series of crucial meetings with various Comorian political actors following the recent 2024 elections. These meetings included discussions with members of the current regime as well as opposition figures.

Among the notable participants, Abdou Soeuf, a former presidential candidate, spoke about the nature of the exchanges between the opposition and the American delegation. Speaking to local media, Mr. Soeuf confirmed that several issues, including allegations of electoral fraud, were discussed. However, he chose not to disclose the specific evidence presented to the delegation to support these accusations.

On the other hand, Mahmoud Daoud Kiki, also a former candidate, responded to rumors of his exile by stating that he was present at the inauguration of the new president of Senegal, thereby denying allegations of fleeing. He also commented on the recent arrest of Mr. Razida, the spokesperson for the opposition coalition, noting that the opposition had not yet decided on the next steps for his release, although a new spokesperson had been appointed.

Mr. Kiki also criticized the arrests targeting opposition members, emphasizing that authorities should instead focus on a woman who was filmed manipulating ballot papers during the election. This case raises questions about the integrity of the electoral process in the Comoros and the authorities’ response to evidence of manipulation.

These meetings highlight increasing international attention on the political situation in the Comoros, where tensions remain high following a controversial election. The United States appears to be playing an active role in seeking transparency and justice, aligning their diplomatic efforts with democratic principles.
