The court has delivered its verdict in the case involving Paul Missiagbeto and his co-defendants. While the Public Prosecutor had requested sentences of up to 24 months in prison for some of the accused, the judge decided to acquit them.
The defense lawyers brilliantly demonstrated the weaknesses of the case, highlighting the lack of a clear link between the alleged actions of the defendants and any previous event. Indeed, the prosecutor tried to link the incident that occurred on April 3, 2024, to a political meeting organized several months earlier by the DMK, an argument vigorously contested by the defense.
During his statement before the court, as reported by Togoscoop, Paul Missiagbeto dared to claim that their actions had actually led to the suspension of the electoral process, a decision ultimately made by the President of the Republic. He also pleaded for the recognition of their efforts rather than their incarceration.
The defense, led by Me Attoh-Messan and his colleagues, refuted one by one the prosecutor’s arguments, denouncing the repressive nature of such trials and calling for a genuine addressing of the country’s social issues.
Despite the acquittal decision by the court, the prosecutor announced his intention to appeal the verdict, according to Togoscoop.
