Investigations have uncovered disturbing details about the Uber driver accused of attempting to kidnap Habiba al-Shamaa. Mahmoud Hashem, the suspect in question, was found to have forged a traffic license in order to continue working for Uber after being terminated from the company.
According to Cairo24 news website, investigators discovered that Hashem possessed two driver’s licenses, each with different national identification numbers. One of these licenses matched his original ID card, while the other was a counterfeit document used while driving Shamaa on the Suez Road. This deceptive act ultimately led to a tragic outcome for the 24-year-old Shamaa, who sadly passed away on March 14 after falling into a coma that lasted for 21 days. The coma was a result of her jumping out of Hashem’s Uber car when he attempted to abduct her.
Shamaa, a graduate of the Faculty of Mass Communication from the British University, was employed in the furniture and decoration industry. On the other hand, Hashem, the 34-year-old suspect, held an industrial technician diploma specializing in refrigeration and air conditioning. He is a married man and a father of three children, with the eldest currently attending primary school.
The suspect confessed earlier in March to the horrifying events that took place on the day of Shamaa’s tragic incident. He admitted that the victim was in his car when he closed the windows and sprayed an aromatic substance inside, prompting her to leap out of the vehicle while he was driving at a speed of 100 km/hour. In a panic, Hashem fled the scene to evade suspicion. Subsequently, he admitted to consuming cannabis, claiming to have used the narcotic substance both before and after the attempted kidnapping.
This shocking revelation has raised concerns about the safety and security measures employed by ride-sharing companies like Uber. Customers rely on these platforms for convenient transportation, assuming they will be protected from harm. However, cases such as this highlight the importance of thorough background checks and stringent regulations to ensure the well-being of passengers.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to bring justice for Shamaa and her family. The tragic loss of a promising young woman has sparked outrage and calls for greater accountability within the transportation industry.
