Boxing fans around the world are eagerly anticipating a potential two-fight deal between heavyweight icons Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Despite being two of the most dominant boxers in the division, these British rivals have yet to face off in the ring.
Both fighters have recently showcased their skills in Saudi Arabia, with Fury narrowly defeating Francis Ngannou last October in Riyadh, while Joshua made quick work of the same opponent in just two rounds. Fury, currently holding the WBC belt, is set to face Oleksandr Usyk on May 18 for the chance to become the undisputed heavyweight champion.
Promoter Eddie Hearn is hopeful that Joshua will take on Fury following his bout with Usyk, despite the rematch clause in the contract. The two fighters have exchanged words over the years, coming close to a potential showdown in August 2021 before Deontay Wilder’s arbitration case forced Fury to fight him for a third time, putting their matchup on hold.
Hearn recently revealed that Saudi Arabian powerbroker Turki Al-Sheikh is interested in staging two fights between AJ and Fury, with one potentially taking place in the UK. With the growing trend of hosting major fights in the Middle East, there are concerns about the future of blockbuster bouts being held in traditional boxing markets.
In an interview with The Sports Agents podcast, Hearn shared his thoughts on Al-Sheikh’s plans: “Turki Al-Sheikh is a very influential figure in sports and entertainment in Saudi Arabia. He’s a huge fight fan and is considering staging two Fury vs. AJ fights, one in Saudi Arabia and one at Wembley Stadium.”
Hearn emphasized the importance of expanding boxing’s global reach: “We must have a more global vision in the sport. Boxing is not limited to a single location. The idea of two British fighters competing for the undisputed world championship is significant, and I believe Al-Sheikh would be open to bringing one of the fights to the UK.”
With the financial backing and support of Al-Sheikh, a potential matchup between Fury and Joshua could be a historic event for boxing fans worldwide. The rivalry between these two heavyweight titans has captivated audiences for years, and a showdown between them could be a defining moment in the sport’s history.
As negotiations continue and plans take shape, the anticipation for a potential showdown between Fury and Joshua continues to build. Boxing fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the moment when these two fighters finally step into the ring to settle their rivalry and determine the undisputed heavyweight champion.
