The island of Maio is hosting this weekend, and for three days, the first activity related to the 500th anniversary of the creation of the Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde.

In statements to Inforpress, the representative of the organization of the celebratory activities, Bernardino Gonçalves, ensured that this meeting serves to present and prepare young people for the meeting that will take place next month in August on the island of Santiago.

Until then, preparatory work will be carried out, intending to have the presence of 20,000 young people from all the islands.

“We want to have the collaboration of as many young people as possible, since not everyone will be able to participate in the Santiago meeting,” he said, informing that similar events will be held on other islands.

The first decentralized event of the jubilee celebration is being attended by around 160 young people, with some coming from the island of Santiago and others from the island of Maio.

Bernardino Gonçalves emphasized that at the Santiago island meeting, the appointed delegates from each island will be present, indicating that participation is open to anyone, as long as they cover the costs of their travel.

The celebratory activities for the 500 years, to take place in 2033, will serve as a passing of the baton and knowledge to young people about the various aspects of the country’s history.

The young Maio native Alcino Ramos Silva welcomed this decentralized initiative, which, as he argued, is a moment of interaction, sharing, and coexistence among the young people of the two islands.

He expressed confidence that the people of Maio will contribute their ideas and suggestions at this event to make the jubilee a success, saying he was expecting a larger number of young people to participate, but admitted that communication may not have been done in the best way.

Yara Fereira, who is the coordinator of the Youth Secretariat of the Diocese of Santiago, emphasized that this decentralized action aims to engage young people not only in religious matters but also in social and environmental aspects.

During today, the young people carried out clean-up activities at the Bixi Rotcha beach and planted fruit trees in the locality of Morrinho, and on Sunday, the 17th, they plan to visit the communities closest to the Northern Natural Park of the island.

The next meeting is scheduled for the island of Santo Antão.
