Asmara, 16 March 2024 – According to the Ministry of Agriculture, there has been a notable 61% increase in soil and water conservation efforts nationwide.

Mr. Dawit Mebrahtu, head of soil and water conservation at the Ministry of Agriculture, revealed that in 2023, soil and water conservation activities encompassed around 26,000 hectares of agricultural lands, with the construction of approximately 5,600 cubic meters of water catchment schemes.

Furthermore, Mr. Dawit highlighted the construction of terraces spanning over 8,000 hectares and approximately 113,000 cubic meters of water diversion schemes in hilly areas and grazing lands.

Mr. Dawit also mentioned the completion of 16 micro-dams in various regions in 2023, with an additional 42 currently under construction, commending the active participation of both the public and the Defense Forces in these dam construction projects.

He stressed that the 810 dams built nationwide are significantly aiding in the advancement of vegetable and fruit farming. Additionally, Mr. Dawit expressed satisfaction with the positive outcomes seen in agricultural production, attributed to farmers adopting improved crop seeds.
