The former president of the republic has reacted to the adoption of the new electoral code in Benin.
During the belated celebration of International Women’s Day in Akpakpa, the president of the Les Démocrates party strongly criticized this code and called for its rapid revision. This statement comes after the government spokesperson’s declaration about the inclusive nature of the new code.
According to Boni Yayi, the new electoral code adopted by a parliamentary majority potentially carries “the seeds of division between the sons and daughters of our common homeland” and a worrying vision for the future of democracy in the country.
The leader of the Démocrates, who is firmly committed to peace and inclusion, advocates for a thorough revision of the electoral code to ensure fair and equitable elections. He highlights legal provisions, including Article 30 of the National Assembly’s internal rules and Article 57 of the constitution, which allow for such a revision.
During the celebration of International Women’s Day by female deputies of the party, Boni Yayi made a special call to women in Benin. Acknowledging the crucial role of women in the fight against exclusion, he encouraged them to mobilize in favor of the revision of the electoral code.
For Boni Yayi, the active participation of women is crucial to ensuring inclusive and democratic elections in 2026. In this regard, the president of the Démocrates strongly encourages women activists to raise awareness among the entire female population about the importance of this commitment.
