A Cameroonian tech entrepreneur, currently based in the United States, named Rebecca Enowchong, has called on President Paul Biya to implement accountability in his government by reshuffling his cabinet, similar to how the national football coach Rigorbet Song was dismissed.
Enowchong made her appeal on the social media platform X, stating, “Please, @PR_Paul_BIYA, apply the same rigor that you apply to Song and Fecafoot [Cameroon Football Federation] to members of the government. It’s not just in football that we have to be demanding.”
Her statement came after the Cameroonian government decided not to renew Song’s contract as the head coach of the men’s national team, the Indomitable Lions. This decision followed President Biya’s public address to Cameroonian youth, in which he directed the Sports Minister to address the national team’s performance.
President Biya’s directive was a response to public dissatisfaction with the team’s performance under Song’s leadership, especially their early elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Enowchong, who has been a vocal critic of the Biya administration, believes that holding other government officials accountable could lead to positive changes in the country. Her message resonated with some Cameroonians who supported her perspective, while others questioned whether replacing a coach alone could bring significant development to Cameroonian football.
Since coming to power in 1982, President Biya has faced criticism for various issues and failures during his tenure. These include human rights abuses, political repression, corruption, economic inequality, handling of the Anglophone crisis, electoral irregularities, youth unemployment, and challenges in healthcare and education systems.
Enowchong’s call for Biya to enforce accountability across all sectors of governance is seen as justified. Failure to address the widespread failures of his government while focusing on football alone is seen as hypocritical.
Overall, there is a growing demand for transparency, accountability, and improvement in governance in Cameroon, and voices like Enowchong’s are advocating for positive change in the country. It remains to be seen whether President Biya will heed these calls and implement the necessary reforms to address the concerns raised by his critics.
