The assassination of Jude Oguejiofor, a popular PDP candidate in the 2023 House of Representatives election in Anambra state, has sparked fresh tension in the region. Oguejiofor, who had returned to the country from abroad along with his brother, was reportedly kidnapped and killed by unknown gunmen. The tragedy deepened further when Oguejiofor’s father reportedly died upon hearing the news of his son’s death.
According to reports, Oguejiofor was a lawyer and the former House of Representatives candidate who contested for the Ihiala federal constituency under the PDP umbrella. He hailed from the Orsumoghu in the Ihiala local government area of Anambra and resided in Nnewi, in the state’s Nnewi North local government area.
The incident took place in the Orsumoghu Community, where Oguejiofor and his brother had gone to see their aged parents. While Oguejiofor met a tragic end at the hands of the gunmen, his brother, who is a medical doctor and recently returned from abroad, was released unharmed.
A source close to the family revealed that the gunmen accused Oguejiofor of writing petitions against them and their activities in the disturbed community. In a shocking turn of events, the father of Oguejiofor reportedly fainted and died upon hearing the news of the death of his son when the gunmen contacted the family.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across Anambra state, drawing parallels with other recent violent incidents in the country. This includes the killing of two traditional rulers in Ekiti state and the abduction of school children in Ekiti, which have also caused deep concern among Nigerians.
President Bola Tinubu responded with grief to the tragic event in Ekiti, promising justice for the family and community of the deceased while commiserating with the state governor, Biodun Oyebanji. Tinubu also directed security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The assassination of Jude Oguejiofor has underscored the growing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly in the southeastern region. It has raised concerns about the safety and security of political candidates and citizens, as well as the need for enhanced measures to combat and prevent such acts of violence.
The tragic loss of Oguejiofor and the ensuing grief and pain experienced by his family and the community serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of violence and insecurity. The untimely death of a promising political candidate has sent shockwaves across the region, prompting calls for urgent action to address the underlying causes and prevent further loss of life.
