The African Diaspora Forum (ADF) has recommended that Zimbabwean domestic workers should be granted special permits to work legally in South Africa. The ADF argues that these workers are an integral part of the South African economy and should be given the opportunity to work without fear of deportation.

According to the ADF, Zimbabwean domestic workers make significant contributions to their employers and to the economy as a whole. They often work long hours and perform essential tasks that allow their employers to participate in the workforce and contribute to the economy. However, many of these workers are currently working in South Africa without legal documentation, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. By granting them special permits, the ADF believes that these workers will have legal protections and be able to access essential services such as healthcare and education.

The ADF’s proposal for special permits for Zimbabwean domestic workers is not only about protecting the rights of these workers but also about acknowledging the important role they play in South African society. By regularizing their immigration status, the ADF believes that these workers will be able to fully integrate into their communities and contribute to the economy without fear of being deported.

Additionally, the ADF argues that granting special permits to Zimbabwean domestic workers would also benefit their employers. Legalizing the status of these workers would provide peace of mind to their employers and ensure that they are not inadvertently exploiting undocumented labor. It would also help to create a more transparent and fair labor market, benefiting both workers and employers alike.

The ADF’s recommendation comes at a time when the issue of immigration and labor rights is a hot topic in South Africa. There are an estimated 1.5 million Zimbabweans living and working in South Africa, many of whom are employed in domestic work. By granting special permits to these workers, the ADF believes that the South African government can take a positive step towards addressing the challenges of undocumented labor while also recognizing the valuable contributions of Zimbabwean domestic workers to the South African economy.
